CREEK VIADUCT, Circa 1889'
Serial# 003
Model is

A "MUST
HAVE" for SERIOUS BALTIMORE & OHIO FANS!!
My model, refer pictures, replicates the Two Track rough cut stone
viaduct design, built in 1889' Stone viaduct replaced the former cast iron Warren Truss type bridge, refer photo
built in 1858.
Viaduct spans Indian Creek at the confluence of Indian Creek and the Youghiogheny River in
Western Pennsylvania. Prototype was built in 1889'
as the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad upgraded the railhead westward from Cumberland, MD in an effort to support increased
traffic as industry and commerce developed in the Ohio River valley.
Over the decades this bridge carried all
passenger & freight trains along the B & O mainline from Cumberland, MD to Connellsville, PA. Baltimore
& Ohio railroads gateway to the Pittsburgh area and the West.
The Indian Creek Viaduct has supported the largest products the engineering department could
muster, including EM1 2-8-8-4 steam locomotives. Today, the viaduct continues to support revenue carrying trains,
in 2006!
Many of these trains are Intermodel, Autoracks and mixed freight with a healthy number of coal
drags, consisting of 160+ loaded coal hoppers pulled and pushed by sets of state of the art GE & EMD AC
diesels. Bridge
is a testiment to the expertise of the original engineers and skilled stoneworkers from Europe.
