The Downingtown Viaduct, built 1892'
The Downingtown four (4) arch stone
arch viaduct, Located in Downingtown, PA is often referred to as the Low bridge line, was part of the original Broadway
mainline through this area. Over time, increased freight and passenger traffic combined with longer & heavier
trains necessitiated placing helpers on many trains due to the undulalting profile of the original mainline.
This bottleneck situation necessatiated a major line restructing in the Downingtown area. The
bottleneck issue was resolved with the construction of the High Bridge line. The new line followed more forgiving
track profile and topography to the to Southeast of Downingtown,PA.
