The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, from inception, embraced the concept of building a railroad for the ages. Both the Carrollton, circa 1830' & Thomas Viaducts, circa 1835' were built of stone. to endure! Build this house of rock and it shall stand!

The Bloomington viaduct, circa 1853', was a foundational block in the B & O railroad "West End" expansion into the Ohio River Valley.

The "West End" Line, diverged from the exisitng mainline at Cumberland, MD and headed due West tapping into the forest products market and opening up the rich coal fields of WVA.

In addition, this line provided a crucial artery for commerce in the region providing Ohio River crossings at Wheeling, WVA and Parkersburg, WVA. This action countered B & O RR arch rival Pennsylvania railroads expansion into the Ohio river valley at Steubenville, Ohio.
