Loyalhanna Viaduct, built 1901' Model
LV-2-3-HO Prototype viaduct,is located on the Former PRR-Broadway mainline crossing Loyalhanna Creek near Latrobe, PA., refer
map. Viaduct was built in 1901 by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Cut stone, two (2) arch,
viaduct is one of many beautiful stone viaducts located on the “Broadway” mainline as it crosses central and Western
Pennsylvania linking North eastern and mid Atlantic Markets with the Ohio River valley and
the Midwestern United States.
Prototype, continues
to serve as integral part of Norfolk Southern Railroad operations the former Pittsburgh division. The original
builders would be proud of their work. Viaduct stands, today, as a tribute to the engineering excellence of the PRR, “Standard
Railroad of the World”. My model commemorates the prototypes service to the commerce
of Pennsylvania, the Keystone State, and our national economy.

As
of 2006, this viaduct continues to operate in daily service on the high density traffic corridor between Johnstown
and Pittsburgh, PA. Prototype has provided one hundred six (106) years service for several owners, including the Pennsylvania
RR, Penn Central and Conrail
History: During the mid 1800s the Pennsylvania
Railroad was experiencing significant growth in traffic and revenues. Management embarked on
a massive line improvement program. Work included right of way and infrastructure upgrades. Dramatic increases in both passenger
and freight Increases in traffic mandated expanding the existing two (2) track mainline
to create the legendary BROADWAY four (4) track mainline. At that time, the Pennsylvania Railroad was a wealthy line. Management and the engineering department spared
no expense in building a rail line that would endure for the ages.
