UNION FURNANCE VIADUCT, Bridge #3 built 1882’
Model replicates the rough cut stone, four (4) arch, four (4) track, design. Prototype viaduct, Bridge #3, crossing Little Juniata River just East
of Union
Furnace, PA. on Norfolk Southern, former Pennsylvania /Conrail railroad, mainline.
Several bridges of wood and iron were built prior to construction of the current
stone arch design. Increases in traffic and Train weights compounded by bridge collapses due to material failures and
periodic flooding mandated a replacement bridge that could endure!
Original bridges were single and
double track. My model replicates the replacement bridge, current protoype four arch cut stone design. built 1898'.
The four (4) track design accomnodting the BROADWAY stands today, providing one hundred Nine (109) years service
to the railroad!
