Cacapon River Viaduct
Built 1889'
Model CRV-4-HO

My model, refer pictures, replicates the four (4) arch span with two (2) tracks,  rough cut stone viaduct design, built in 1901',  Viaduct parallels the Potomac River spaning the confluence of the Cacapon river just east of  the small community of Great Cacapon, WVA.

Prototype was built as the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad upgraded the railhead westward toward Cumberland, MD in their effort to extend the their presence in the region. Industry and commerce were increasing in the region and their fierce competition with the Pennsylvania Railroad mandated opening up the Ohio River valley to Eastern markets.

Over the decades this bridge carried all passenger & freight trains along the B & O mainline from Point of Rocks,  MD,  where the New and old mainlines converge, to Cumberland, MD where tracks diverge over Sand Patch or over the West End.

The Great Cacapon River viaduct has supported the largest products the engineering department could muster, including B & O's EM1 2-8-8-4 steam locomotives. Today, the viaduct continues to support revenue carrying trains, in 2006!  This section of track is a high density corridor on the CSX.  Many of these trains are Intermodel, Autoracks and mixed freight with a healthy number of coal drags, consisting of 160+ loaded coal hoppers pulled by sets of state of the art GE & EMD  AC diesels.

Model is an example of Americas "turn of the Century" engineering excellence. Bridge is a testiment to the original builders engineering expertise and skilled stoneworkers from Europe.

I have, personally, visited this location several times over the years collecting information on the B  & O

This model will be a show stopper! Model would make excellent focal point on your layout, display or photo prop for your prized Brass models.
